Chapter Ten

Sogon the Great Warrior

As the siege entered its second phase, at first nothing much seemed to have changed – the daily probing of the city’s defences continued; bands of Lion-men would ride within shooting distance of the walls, discharge their arrows, then swerve quickly out of range of the defenders’ missiles. Gradually, the intensity of the attacks increased – Agon would attack several parts of the wall at once, then edge his siege engines a little closer as though about to launch a major assault, only to withdraw them again. He was playing a game of cat and mouse, gradually sapping the strength and resolve of the city’s defenders.

Then, when he felt the time was right, he played his trump card: Sogon the Great Warrior.

Sogon was a colossus, standing head and shoulders above his tallest rivals and broad as a barn door. His strength was legendary. It was said he could hold a bullock in its tracks. Agon had made for him a special suit of armour, thicker and heavier than any normal man could wear and fight with, but Sogon wore it lightly and moved with the ease and heft of a war horse. One kick from Sogon would send a man flying, one thrust of his shield would send him flat on his back, and when he brought down his huge blade, no armour could turn it.

Agon had first met him when visiting one of the smaller tribes two years before his assault on Trion. He was standing beside the tribe’s chief, arms folded, huge and terrifying. Immediately, Agon saw his potential. What a man to have by your side – who would dare defy you?

Agon was up to his usual tricks, bringing gifts to the tribe – fleeces, mutton, baskets of grain and fruit – laying them at the chief’s feet and declaring, “See what Agon brings you! And look at these pitiful few men I have to do it with!” waving to the half dozen men he had brought with him. “How much more could I bring you with a little help?”

Then began the usual, subtle negotiations: “Give me a handful of men and I will bring you more, and more often.” Seldom successful at first but difficult to resist after three, four, five visits, each one bringing free gifts, each one making him more popular with the tribe and a hero to some of the younger men who wanted to follow him. The pressure on the chief became irresistible. This time, Agon wanted only one man: Sogon. He walked around him admiringly, flattering him. “What a man! Such a man as this should be clad in fine armour! He should feast on mutton every day! With a man like this, I could bring you great riches.”

At first, Sogon and the chief resisted these overtures, but Agon was relentless. His visits became more frequent and the gifts more extravagant. “Let me have him for just a few days – you can have him back if you are not happy.
